WHO WE ARE
The Brockenbude Glubos is a collective that operates under supervision of the Verein Kreislauf. Our team manages the Verein Kreislauf and also works in the store. We are also responsible for managing policies and operating decisions.
We donate all profit to the Frauen-OASE Basel as well as selected other social and cultural projects. Your donations support our cause.
All furniture and items no longer needed we’ll pick up and sell in our store. Thus we can recycle all sorts of funky, funny and useful items, and textiles are saved from unnecessary destruction. You can find a wide selection of everyday-objects, furniture and antiques in our store.
The waste and no longer sellable goods we dispose of ecologically and separate glass, metal, porcelain, wood, textiles, electronic devices and toxic fluids.
In our special shop-window, young artists have the chance to exhibit their ideas in public.
HISTORY OF THE BROCKENBUDE GLUBOS
The first Brockenstube Glubos opened its doors in a condemned building in Kleinhüningen in 1972. It was led by an organization named „SJWG/Selbsthilfe Jugendlicher in Wohngemeinschaften“. The name was a pun on the big warehouse „Globus“, which sold cheap furniture. Soon though, they were evicted and had to wait for three years until they found another location, this time in Riehen. During this time the net income was donated to a therapy house in Riehen.
With the start of the eighties, the store and its collective, which by now had moved to Kleinbasel, fell into a crisis due to internal issues. The store began to lose income as a direct effect of these issues, so it was decided to separate the business side from the therapy. No more would former drug addicts work in the store, and the organization was changed into an independent collective.
In 1982 this collective first opened a new store at Hammerstrasse, and then in 1985 relocated to Rappoltshof 12 were it still is. The collective consisted of 8-10 fix members – divided equally to women and men. The collective ran the business side and worked in-store hours as a team.
Since its independence, the Glubos became profitable again and could donate larger sums to the therapy house in Riehen. In 1992, a big jubilee-party was held: 20 years Brockenbude Glubos and 10 years an autonomous collective.
With the changeover to Verein Kreislauf and after the dissolution of the therapy house in Riehen, the new collective decided to support the Frauen-OASE Basel, an important shelter for prostitutes, female drug-addicts and women on the street. Though, in the first year, only a symbolic sum could be donated apart from natural products, by now the Brockenbude Glubos has become one of its most important donors.
